Five unnamed Kuril Islands were named

Five unnamed Islands in the Kuril chain has a name. The corresponding decree was signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

"In accordance with the Federal law "On naming of geographical objects" and on the basis of proposals of the Sakhalin regional Duma, as well as to perpetuate the memory of Lieutenant-General Derevyanko K. N., Lieutenant General Grechko A. R., statesman, diplomat Gromyko A. A., statesman, Governor Farkhutdinov I. P. and captain A. I. Shchetinina to assign names to geographical objects located on the territory of the Sakhalin oblast...", – stated in the document.

Suggestions about the name of the Islands was prepared by the Sakhalin regional branch of the Russian geographical society. As the Chairman of the Department Sergey Ponomarev, work in this direction will be continued.

Who are these people, which are named in honor of the island? 

Island Derevyanko

Located in southern-Kuril district of the Sakhalin oblast. Is a rocky area of land with a height of about 20 m above sea level. The area is approximately 200 sq. m. Surveyed members of the Russian geographical society Sergey Baskovym and Sergey Ponomarev during the landing on 16 September 2014. The name proposed by Ponomarev and Sakhalin branch of Russian geographical society on behalf of the Soviet military commander, Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko.

Kuzma Derevyanko (1904-1954) was one of the few generals who was awarded all three awards named after outstanding generals – Suvorov, Kutuzov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky. During the great Patriotic war – chief of staff of several armies (53rd, 57th, 4th guards). Participated in the battle of Kursk, in the battle for the Dnieper. In 1945, signed on the Soviet Union, the Act of surrender of Japan that marked the implementation of the Yalta (Crimea) agreement the United States, great Britain and the Soviet Union on the return to the Soviet Union of southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.

Island Gnecco

Located at the Eastern coast of the island of Shikotan in the composition of the Small Kuril ridge. Area – 0,0204 sq km. the Name proposed by the Sakhalin branch of the Russian geographical society in honor of Hero of the Soviet Union, General-Lieutenant Alexei Gnecco.

Alexei Romanovich Gnecco (1900-1980) – Soviet military commander, hero of the Soviet Union, Lieutenant-General. In August 1945, together with the commander of the Pacific fleet, Admiral I. S. Yumashev headed the preparation and conduct of the landing operation of Soviet troops in the Northern and middle Kuril Islands.

Island Gromyko

Included in the group of Islands of the Taira at the Northern tip of Urup island near the Cape Castricum. Area – 0,2796 sq km. the Name proposed by the representative of the Russian foreign Ministry in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, V. N. Bow and Sakhalin branch of the Russian geographical society in honor of the outstanding Soviet statesman Andrei Gromyko.

Andrei Andreyevich Gromyko (1909-1989), Soviet statesman and diplomat. The Soviet Ambassador to the US, UK, permanent representative of the USSR to the UN, first Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs, the Minister of foreign Affairs (1957-1985). Signed from the USSR the UN Charter. Participated directly in the preparation and holding of the Yalta (February 1945) and Potsdam (July 1945) conferences, which was adopted on the conditions of Soviet entry into the war against Japan and the decision on subsequent return of the Soviet Union of southern Sakhalin and the transfer of the Kuril Islands.

Island Farkhutdinova

Located off the East coast of the island of Shikotan in the composition of the Small Kuril ridge. Area – 0,0307 sq km. the Name proposed by the Sakhalin branch of the Russian geographical society on behalf of the former Governor of the Sakhalin region Igor Farkhutdinov.

Igor Pavlovich Farkhutdinov (1950-2003) was a statesman, Governor of the Sakhalin region (1995-2003), doctor of economic Sciences. Over the years, the leadership of Sakhalin oblast in difficult circumstances found the solution of several problems in the restructuring of the region's economy, which resulted in a noticeable improvement in the socio-economic situation of the region.

Island Shchetinina

Included in the group of Islands of the Taira at the Northern tip of Urup island near the Cape Castricum. Surveyed and described in November 2012. The name proposed by the Sakhalin branch of the Russian geographical society in honour of captain Anna Shchetinina.

Anna Ivanovna Shchetinina (1908-1999) is the world's first woman sea captain, 27 years achieved world renown for the wiring of the steamer "Chinook salmon" on Kamchatka. In the autumn of 1941 made 17 flights with military cargoes to Vladivostok from the United States. In 1963, he headed the Maritime Department of the Russian geographical society. Books A. I. Shchetinina "On the seas and beyond the seas..." and "along various sea routes" was published several times. For many years he taught "Navigation and sailing directions", "seamanship", "Hydrometeorology and Oceanography" in Leningrad and Vladivostok higher marine engineering colleges.
