Baikonur launch site from space

Baikonur cosmodrome - the first and largest spaceport in the world. Located on the territory of Kazakhstan, Kyzylorda region between the town of Casale and the village of Zhosaly, near the village of Toretam.

How it all began?

  • 12 Jan 1955. Arriving at the siding tyura-Tam the first units of military engineers and surveyors for the preparation of the deployment and expand the construction and installation of infrastructure. Start of construction of the village.
  • 20 Jul 1955 — construction of the first launch pad.
  • 15 may 1957 — the launch of the first rocket R-7 from Baikonur - unsuccessful.

  • 4 October 1957 at 22:28 — the beginning of the space age, the launch of the first artificial satellite PS-1 through R-7.
