In 2022, Russia will launch new Glonass-K and Glonass-K2 satellites into orbit

24.03.2022

Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Roscosmos State Corporation, announced new launches in 2022 as part of the development of the domestic GLONASS navigation system. So two navigation spacecraft - Glonass-K and Glonass-K2 - should be launched into orbit.

"This year we are going to put into orbit several more spacecraft, already of a new generation, not Glonass-M, but Glonass-K and Glonass-K2," he said on Channel One.

In addition, Rogozin said that Russia should not be afraid of a possible GPS shutdown for domestic users. "I want to say that it is technically very difficult to do this. Because the GPS orbital grouping cannot selectively turn off in the direction of Russia, and not turn off in the direction of other countries," the head of Roscosmos explained.

He also noted that the United States may try to turn off its GPS ground stations on the territory of Russia, which is about 10 stations (at the same time, according to the head of the state corporation, the United States refused to place GLONASS ground stations at home at the time).

"The third option may be an attempt to flash smartphones that people have in their hands in order to turn off GPS. Even if someone manages to do it technically, although I don't believe it, it's very difficult and very stupid," Dmitry Rogozin said.

According to the head of Roscosmos, a few years ago Russia agreed with China on cooperation in the field of navigation. "The combination of BeiDou and GLONASS gives the absolute global accuracy of the navigation signal. And GLONASS is still so formed that it is especially good for the northern hemisphere, for all our needs, I emphasize, dual-use. We are not afraid of sanctions in this part at all," he stated.
